After an accident, it's important to get medical care within 14 days. Bart Gatz, MD, of American Interventional Pain Institute in Greenacres, Florida, is a licensed physician who can perform your EMC evaluation so you're eligible for the maximum insurance benefit. Dr. Gatz is a pain specialist who can help with your EMC and also treat you as you heal after the accident.
What is an EMC?
EMC is short for emergency medical condition. Florida Statutes Title XXXVII, Chapter 627 defines it as a condition that needs urgent care, without which you could suffer long-term or even fatal consequences.
Many accidents cause only minor injuries. Some cause serious damage, and in some cases the initial injury can become long-term or permanent unless you get prompt treatment.
An accident is emotionally, psychologically and physically traumatic. Even when the impact doesn't seem severe, the shock and adrenaline make it easy to overlook an injury.
Why should I see a doctor after an accident?
See a doctor after an auto accident if you hit your head, lost consciousness, or have any numbness, sensory changes or pain, even if you don't think you're seriously hurt.
Concussions, brain injuries, neck injuries and internal bleeding can cause only mild symptoms at first, so it's always best to be examined.
Some injuries don't show up until several days after the accident. Symptoms that need a closer look and possibly treatment include:
- Headaches
- Back pain
- Neck or shoulder pain
- Neck or shoulder stiffness
- Numbness
- Abdominal pain
- Trouble with physical function
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
A headache that won't go away a few days after an accident could mean a blood clot or a neck injury that's getting worse. Whiplash is one of the most common accident injuries and can become a recurring problem without treatment. Back pain after a crash can come from nerve damage in the spinal cord or damage to the vertebrae.
How do I arrange an EMC exam?
A medical professional can refer you for an EMC evaluation, or you can call us directly. Dr. Gatz is licensed to perform EMC exams and has done many of them, especially for people hurt in car accidents and slip-and-falls. Remember that care needs to start within 14 days of the accident.
